Spectra is an organization that hosts bi-annual, full-day events on the west coast for women in tech. In the past, we have hosted women’s hackathons at YouTube HQ in July 2016 and Domino Data Lab in July 2018. Our upcoming event will be on July 20th!
We are passionate about bringing together female students and professionals in tech from all around the world. Our events offer attendees a safe and inviting environment to experiment with technology at any experience level.
We believe that every woman should have the opportunity to excel in computer science and strengthen her technical abilities. The Spectra team invites you to come learn new skills, inspire one another, and build long-lasting connections at Spectra.

What is Spectra?
Spectra is a 12-hour hackathon open to all individuals who identify as female or non-binary. In this case, the word "hack" describes how multiple technologies can be used together in new and creative ways. Teams will spend the day creating a website, mobile app, or hardware creation. The Spectra team believes that the most important aspect of a hackathon is the community it generates and the skills that attendees can take away with them at the end of the event.
What events does Spectra host?
The Spectra team hosts two events each year: a workshop day in the winter and a hackathon in the summer. Both of our events are aimed towards women of all technical experience levels, but we especially encourage beginners to come and learn new skills.
Our goal is for our attendees to explore computer science and technology - the focus is not on competition, but rather on personal and technical development.
What if I don’t have a team or idea yet?
Not a problem! We will have team formation and ideation sessions to help you find people to work with.
Who can attend?
Any individual who identifies as female, inclusive of non-binary and trans people, and is at least 18-years-old can attend.
When will I know if I'm able to attend?
We are still currently working on the process of notifying if you will be able to attend. Most likely you will recieve an email from us confirming your spot for this hackathon. Please check back soon for an update.
What do you mean by non-competitive? Will there be no prizes?
Non-competitive means there will be no ranking for best overall hacks (no 1st/2nd, etc. places.) Instead, we will have other fun categories for prizes such as “best mobile hack” or “most creative use of xyz API."
What if I don’t know how to code?
Spectra is the perfect place and time to learn! There will be plenty of workshops and mentors to guide you through your first project. Participants are not filtered by technical background. Our focus is on making Spectra fun and welcoming for everyone involved. We welcome attendees from all levels and background.
I love what Spectra is doing! How can I help?
Spectra events are not-for-profit. All of our events so far have been free to attend. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help support upcoming Spectra events, please reach out to the Spectra team at hello@sospectra.com if you would like to sponsor, please send us an email.
You can also help the day of! You can either lead a workshop/give a tech talk or mentor or volunteer. Please contact hello@sospectra.com if you are interested.
What is the cost to attend?
This event is free for all who attend! We’ll be providing you with the space, WiFi, food, drinks, snacks, and swag!
What should I bring?
All you'll need is a valid photo ID (a student ID works), a laptop, a charger, and a willingness to grow and learn. For more information about behavior, check out our Code of Conduct.
Will there be transportation?
Accepted hackers will be contacted via email regarding transportation options. For those outside of the SF Bay area, unfortunately we will not be able to provide travel reimbursements this year.
